Interview Date: 10.5.07

Where are you from? (if it is another planet you can just state which one, no need for country, city, or zip-code).

I am from the planet Mirafa in the galaxy Suplex 6, 4th quadrant. We don’t have these “zip codes”.

How did you come by the name "Voldar"? Did you choose it or was it chosen by you? (If you chose it, why?)

It was given to me by the Elder SuperKnights of Mirafa. When they saw what I could do with a Power Glove, there was no question that Voldar would be my moniker henceforth.

Why are you in/ why did you stay in Los Angeles?

Funny story. I was flying my spaceship through the galaxy of Plexilymph on the lookout for riot toads, pooting spots, and keeping an ear to the ground for wayward Primians (as recently, I’ve been the only one who could safely escort them home). A planet-tower told me that Zhermin Okes was a good place for toad scouting. I excitedly flew along asking everyone I knew how to get there. Well, you can imagine my amusement when I found myself touching down in Sherman Oaks, a suburb of Los Angeles, having fallen victim to the poor hearing of more than a few alien races. All the same, within a few days I was sipping mimosas with Tobey Maguire and taking Mensa tests with Shelly Duvall (Grrr…). It’s been home base ever since, though I still travel the universe.

Has any of your musical progress been impeded by earthquakes, riots, skin-melting smog, or traffic?

On the contrary, all these things have fueled my creative instincts. I don’t deal with traffic much since I have a spaceship and rocket-commuter (duh!). As for the rest of it, nothing inspires zombie visions like skin-melted asthmatics brawling atop a rumbling planet. Makes me want to return to the ballet.

What would you define as your "sound"? What musical style or genre do you affiliate with?

I find it difficult to align myself with any particular musical movement. The 8-Bit movement has been bubbling underneath the surface for sometime. Though this is primarily the realm of circuit-benders and Gameboy musicians. I take my sound from the most video game-like patches I can find on modern synthesizers. Electronica is the most general genre one might claim. I’m more like the plastic music sound that started coming out of your planet’s Japan in the early 2000s.

What's the highest level of pac-man that you've reached?

I believe that back on my home planet I once reached Level Pi.

What are your top-five favorite video-games of all time and space?

Space Invaders
Q-Bert
Sonic the Hedgehog
Pitfall

Really the entire Atari 2600 collection was magnificent. But I don’t think anything can possibly beat Journey: Escape. The concept of Steve Perry battling crazed groupies to the 8-bit soundtrack of “Don’t Stop Believing” is a concept too artful for casual philosophy.

When and why did you start creating such beautiful tunes?

When the muse guides, one must answer. Why does the chicken croak? Why does the sailor giggle? We do what comes naturally. I’ve made music all my life. It was only the past few years in which I started using synthesizers instead of pencils.

What does that gun do, exactly? Have you ever had to use it?

It shoots lasers. I’ve used it only a few times.

Who or what is your greatest enemy?

Kezler, the evil alien emperor who terrorized the Primians for centuries. Space centuries. Fortunately, I’ve destroyed Kezler (fine use for the laser gun). But I have heard that some former followers of his have been devising a replication. Let me know if you hear anything.

What affect do you want your music to have on people?

I have a message. And that message is Funga. It is the way of my people on Mirafa. It is much like your “zen” but with extra butter. I hope that my music can inspire Funga in you Earthlings.

Who do you think made better video-games in the 80s, the United States (famous for Q-Bert), Japan (famous for Pac-Man), or the Soviet Union (famous for Tetris)?

Who was better, Loggins or Messina? It’s impossible to pick one over the other when you’re in the presence of greatness. I think the fact that such astounding games could arise in the midst of a Cold War era shows that you Earthlings have a greater grasp of Funga than you think.

Where do you draw your inspiration for such melodies?

Often from experiences in my youth on my home planet watching our three suns rise over a golden horizon, listening to the Jagag birds gently whistle. And also from TV.

If you could create a video-game, unlimited budget, what would it be about? What would it look like? What would it sound like? What would we get at the ending?

There are not enough hours in your Earth days for me to indulge that fantasy. Suffice to say, it would be a multiverse adventure utilizing all 11 senses (including the six that you humans do not have), catapulting the player into an interactive soul-altering maze of quantum mechanical irony, championship pooting, and chess at the hands of Xelif. I also want flying babies.

How does one be "Funga"? Are you Funga all the time, some of the time, or do you aspire to be Funga as some sort of religious state of perfect existence?

One does not “become” Funga. One awakens the Funga in himself (or herself). As far as I experience Funga: No, I do not exist in a Fungish state at all times. My rocket will have a blown gasket. The cat will poot on the cellar floor. My Funga will get fuzzy. But to be able to re-enter Funga whilst life does as it may is the true sign of a master.

Who is the most "Funga" person you have ever met?

Martin Sheen.

What is your dream, what do you hope to accomplish before you die/ leave this plane of existence/ go back to your planet of origin?

First of all, I do not plan on dying for another 562 space years. It’ll be awhile. In the meantime, I would like to complete my toad collection and spread my music to a few more galaxies. I hope to tour more. I’d like for your Earth to make Funga its own.

Are there any video-game musicians that you admire or aspire to?

Nobuo Uematsu is a modern master. Koji Kondu set the standard. Dave Warhol and Martin Galway. There are a number of equal artists being born everyday.

Does anyone love your music?

Millions love my music.

Does anyone love you?

Many love me as I love them.

Will you marry me?

I would rather not. Internet dating is suspect.

Any important events coming up (besides our marriage)?

Again, I refuse to marry you. Though you are a nice man. I am just getting started on recording another album. And as soon as that is done I’ll be planning a global tour. Until that happens I am producing a number of other artists, painting, and collecting toads.

Gots anything else to say Voldar man? Words of wisdom perhaps?

When your east-born sun rises and a chilly air beckons it to its daily zenith, pause for a moment and consider that thousands of Primians were enslaved by Kezler. Do not let this injustice repeat itself. For we must all fight with binary valor. Unsheath your Wiis and dance the Keytar Slide, for I shall require all the help I can from you Earthlings to flood this planet with blooping love. As always….Be joyous. Be kind. Be Funga!
